With Women in Red, Maurizio Grandi delves into the feminine universe through a lens shaped by memories and sensations drawn from his own life and imagination. The woman in red becomes a symbol of emancipation: a bridal gown merged with lingerie, fusing love with sensuality. The sea—bathed in the eerie light of a pre-apocalyptic dawn—embodies the infinite possibility that, in Grandi’s inner world, womanhood represents.
And then there are the ballerinas, phone booths, sand-filled rooms, the amusement park—symbols and spaces that populate his mental landscape. Finally, the woman wearing boxing gloves emerges as a powerful, symbolic vision—a response to femicide and the daily violence endured by women.
This project is born native of AI, shaped through a complex interplay of multiple software tools and iterative prompt crafting to reach an image the artist carried within: womanhood and the infinite sea, the light of dawn as both rebirth and second chance.
And then, the gaze—those intensely unique expressions sought with care. This became Grandi’s most demanding and daring pursuit: not the familiar, repeated faces that AI so often generates, but authentic gazes—real in their emotional weight. The eyes of women who do not exist, yet now live in these images.
